Sigurd Solberg AS, one of the top designers and suppliers of complete bridge and engine room consoles to vessels all over the world are pleased to have been involved with the award winning Vision of the Fjords. The company supplied a comprehensive suite of (Navico) Simrad electronics to the futuristic Norwegian vessel designed for environmentally-friendly sightseeing in protected conservation areas.
Developed by shipyard Brødene AA for sightseeing operator The Fjords, the eye-catching Vision of the Fjords began carrying tourists between Flåm and Gudvangen along Norway’s western coast in June. Those on board are free to roam over the distinctive zig-zagging exterior, designed to resemble a mountainside trail, in pursuit of the ultimate view of the UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord.
Featuring an innovative electric hybrid propulsion system, the ferry is capable of travelling entirely under battery power while sightseeing in conservation areas. Battery power allows incredibly quiet and emission-free travel, while on-board diesel engines provide extended range in less sensitive areas. The ferry’s batteries can be recharged by its diesel engines, or from an on-shore power source. Lightweight carbon fibre construction helps to reduce energy consumption, and to maximise range under battery power.
All of Vision of the Fjords’ main bridge electronics – from radar to the electronic chart display information system (ECDIS), autopilot, gyrocompass, and DGPS – are Simrad-branded solutions. This is similar to the Helgøy Glimt, a carbon fibre fast ferry which also undertakes passenger services in the Norwegian fjords and is fitted out with the latest Simrad technology.
"This is a major reference for Simrad safety, navigation and control technology”, says Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “The Norwegian ferry market is rightly known as a trend setter in ship technology, but it is also fiercely competitive. Securing this contract puts Simrad bridge products at the heart of innovation in the commercial maritime industry."
Vision of the Fjords is equipped for paperless navigation with the IMO type-approved Simrad E5024 ECDIS system, a dual-station solution featuring an intuitive touchscreen interface on two high-resolution widescreen displays.
The ferry also features an IMO type-approved Simrad ARGUS radar system for High Speed Craft, which combines the images from two separate on-board radar arrays into a single display including full ARPA and AIS functionality.
Accurate heading information is provided by the Simrad GC85 compact gyrocompass, which is fully approved for High Speed Craft. Position is calculated by a Simrad MX612 satellite navigation system, and both systems feed into the award-winning, IMO type-approved Simrad AP80 autopilot.
As part of its comprehensive safety equipment, Vision of the Fjords also features a Simrad EP70 Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).
The Fjords chief executive Rolf Sandvik has announced that the partnership behind Vision on the Fjords intends to build more vessels of similar specification, continuing to incorporate the latest technology into its designs. For now, the distinctive Vision of the Fjords continues to turn heads as a unique, futuristic sight as it cruises up and down the Norwegian coast.
